Why Pursue the Program of Distinction Recognition?

For the Facility or System

The APIC® Program of Distinction is a voluntary program for interested facilities that recognizes leading facilities with a designation of excellence.

Facilities that earn the designation, gain the ability to use the Program of Distinction logo in their marketing and communications outreach. Items provided include a physical award for the facility’s recognition wall, a crystal award for the C-suite, lapel pins for the IP Team, and a digital logo for official documents and email signatures. In addition, APIC will recognize each facility or system to its 15,000 members via the APIC website, eNewsletter, Prevention Strategist magazine, and APIC Annual Conference.  Press releases will be sent to certain government and accreditation organizations affiliated with the facility, such as a state health department, The Joint Commission, DNV-GL, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and others.

If a facility or system does not pass the onsite assessment phase, a list of recommendations with accompanying resources will be provided as an action plan to address gaps in their IPC program.  The overall goal is to assist the IPC program in becoming better prepared to prevent and control infections within its patient population.  Facilities and systems in this position will receive a discount when re-applying for the Program of Distinction.

For the Field of Infection Prevention and Control

With this program, APIC seeks to increase the inherent value of the infection prevention and control department with the C-suite, with the public, and within the larger healthcare arena.

The intent behind the program is to assist facilities in maintaining an increased level of readiness with standards developed for infection prevention teams by infection preventionists with 35-40+ years of experience in the field. Having an established set of criteria that defines the necessary components for an IPC program to achieve excellence offers a road map for facilities of all sizes. As the leading association for infection preventionists, APIC is in a unique position to provide this criteria – criteria developed to drive higher standards for the field and increase patient safety.
